Music and Sound Effects

One of the main reasons why scary movies are so scary is because of the type of music or sound effects they make during a nasty scene or a killing scene. In the movie Psycho one of the best scenes ever is when a women is about to be killed in a shower. While the killer is about to emerge to kill the women high-pitch string instruments are played while the killer does his knife strokes. Many horror movies have used high pitch instrumental scenes. According to filmsound.org the movie Jaws uses long low bass sounds which give your heart a pumping when the huge killer sharks come to get the human flesh. Ever wonder how arms and legs are broken into half or when rib just breaks into half in a horror movie. Well these noises come from the vegetable salary. For bone, cracking sounds, salary is used for those sounds. A lot of fruits and vegetables are used in horror movies to make their sounds. When a man skull is about to be crushed they used pistachio being crush on a metal plane. When bullets are being hit on a metal bar or onto a metal plate, a dog eating a dog food in a can makes those sounds. The most common music used in horror films is orchestra music. Violins and pianos are good for the music industry or horror. Here is a lovely good sound used off the soundtrack in the horror movie Ghost Ship http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGt7vg_sDLk. However, orchestra is not the only genre they use in horror movies they also use alternative rock that is my favorite kind of music. They also use heavy metal rock as a popular genre. One of the most famous sounds in horror is the three-note piano melody used in the movie Halloween. Piano is one of the good ways to get a heart pounding freighting experience. Here is an example of the sound in the movie Halloween .

  1. This post is so true. The music, even though many don't notice it, builds the suspense and the tension that this genre has to offer. It makes the hair raising experience just that much more real. Unlike in the past, with the cheesier music when the monster strikes, or something happens; today's music is so entwined with a movie that it just seems to be there, without distraction....like it was meant to be. Movie sound effects are always intriguing as to how people can make sounds from non similar happenings to sound like the real deal, such as your celery example. These two topics combined allow the viewer to get more involved in the movie and it have totally changed the way we have EXPERIENCED the movie, rather than just watching it. Well done Jesse.

  2. That was a surprising sound clip from the movie Ghost Ship! I wasn't expecting something so soft sounding. Someone I was sitting by asked me if I was listening to something Disney! haha
I was also really surprised and intrigued to learn how they make certain sound effects! I would have never guessed that the sound of bones breaking was celery crunching. That's really neat.
The music is one of my favorite parts about scary movies. It builds tension and heightens suspense! It can really make or break a movie.
    Nice topic choice!

  3. The sound effects can make a huge difference in movies, especially in the horror movie. Kinda like when you know the killer is somewhere around but have no idea where there coming from, that music just keeps getting suspensful and you don't know when its coming. It makes for a very exciting surprise.
