History of Horror films

Horror films have lots of history. People like to scare other people just cause. Even as a kid we were always interested in those scary stories our elders would tell us over campfires or just at home by ourselves. We like these stories because of the rush and the adrenalin they give us making us want more and more of the story on what is going to happen next. The first monster movie is The Golem, which was made in 1915 and is about a solid clay man who starts to destroy people. The next movie was made in 1919 called The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. The Cabinet of Caligari was the first movie to make a scary setting of a maniac. The maniac film became haunting for many viewers in 1919. The next film I am going to talk about is one of my old favorite’s horror films of all time. That movie is called Nosferatu. Nosferatu became popular in 1922 and was the first vampire movie. It became some sort of movie just like the movie we know, as Dracula here is a link where u can watch a clip of Nosferatu YouTube - Nosferatu (1922) Trailer . Horror began to become more popular in the 1930’s with popular movies coming out like Dracula in 1931 and Frankenstein in 1931 as well. Other movies that came out are the Mummy, Freaks, King Kong, The Bride of Frankenstein and Mad scientist according to horrorfimhistory.com. As films began to become more and more popular so were ideas as well. The forties kicked of with wolf movies and cat movies. Then in the fiftys there were movies made from creatures. In the 1960 a popular film called Psycho became one of scariest psycho killers of all time. As movies became better and horror became more realistic getting to watch a movie at these days are good.

  1. How many of those scary movies have you seen? Because some of them aren't too bad. What do you tend to like more; the old movies or the new one's?
Someone else in our class wrote a blog about silent movies and special effects. Special effects are one of the best things about scary movies! If you look back at that first Dracula movie I must say that they did pretty good with the makeup and special effects. If you compared the effects back then to the effects now it's probably not too impressive but looking back, they were ahead of their time.

  2. I would have to agree that i like the older horror films myself. What about horror films today? Do you actually believe they are still giving people that same fear that the old ones struck in them or are they just becoming normal movies? I find that newer horror movies aren't as scary as the old ones are. They have become more about gore then the fear of the darkness or whatever it was that gave them their power. Today's "scary movies" are just not the same.

  3. The vampire’s hands in Nosferatu, Creeped me out when I was younger.... and they still do! My personal favorite classic horror film is "The Creature from the Black Lagoon". The great thing about these movies is that they are timeless and we owe much of modern day costuming and storylines to these classics. I don't think the movie industry would be the same without this era of horror films. It’s too bad today’s have to be so gross, such as the Saw movies, which aren’t even scary….just gross.

  4. ohh yes , horror movies are always exciting, whether its old or new. Horror movies cannot be compared with the year it was made. It’s the story or the conception which is important. The movies on vampire can be said as a new conception. Mummy can also be called something which is totally new and different. Not only that, the concept of "Split Character" also became a famous conception after the move "The Exorcist"...
So it doesn’t really matter whether the movie is old or new, what matters is the Story.
